  1. I dance because I love music. Just sitting and listening to music isn't enough, I have to feel it/BE with it. If I'm some place (such as a concert) I'm not just listening, I'm dancing in my imagination. It's just real intense for me. I wish I was a better piano player so I could compose and then choreograph to it, that would be the ultimate. Dance also lets me express myself better than I can otherwise. Emotions can come out, feelings, sensitivity. Andy
  2. I found Cooper's "ballet" to be exciting and fun but the final performance was not what I expected. I thought it was going to be a jazzier contemporary piece but it was too POP, the Michael Jackson music too dated. They could have made it just as exciting with jazz music. The part earlier where Jody's character is upset with Cooper during rehearsal and then Charlie calms her down and tells her to "dance it out" is what I'm talking about. They have her dancing to just solo drum music and I loved that, the music was perfect but for the performance she danced the same steps to something else entirely and I think that ruined the feeling. Anyway, that was disappointing but they probably wanted to appeal to a broader audience. I hated the bed scene on stage, that was over the top sleazy and not necessary. They "Madonna-ized" ballet there which is cheap and nasty. They sort of were sending a message that sex sells and I don't think ballet ever has to do that. It can be sensual and convey torrid love story without being graphic (i.e., it was totally unnecessary for Jody to have to strip down to her black undies, what was the point of that)? I just always feel that the dancing should tell the story or convey the feeling, not the removal or lack of clothing or props. I found Jonathan's ballet boring and nothingness, but they probably planned it to be that way. It was dark, dreary to me, sad. There was no real story to it ('course, we weren't meant to see the whole thing) and I would have loved to know what the heck it was about, seen more of it. I don't really know how Cooper's can be compared to Jonathan's in this way since we only saw a bit of Jonathan's and the entire Cooper's. But I guess if I had to choose, I would rather have been in Jonathan's since Cooper's was just overall too music video for me. I'm not saying I didn't like the movie, I loved it overall. Finally there were some excellent scenes with male dancers. I loved the part where Cooper and Charlie are in rehearsal and sort of duking it out by trying to out perform each other. Incredible! But the finale wasn't what I expected or wanted at all.
  3. I believe it was jazz but you have to remember, this was a movie and everything was carefully choreographed and there were probably many takes before they got it all together to look like one fluid piece. They used a little of this and a little of that probably for the full effect. I loved it and that was one of my favorite parts, especially when Stiefel danced. He really let loose!
  4. Just overall, more of a selection of men's dance products and stores that stocked them. How many times have I walked into a dance shop and found only one or fewer items for guys (such as ballet shoes or one brand of tights-if any). Or how about mail order catalogs that list the same old same old for several years in a row and don't even bother getting real dancers to model them. Oh yeah, you asked for ONE thing, sorry.
  5. Yes, that gets high marks for rudeness (a score of 9 out of 10). That reminds me, I invited a teacher I knew from a different studio to watch our spring recital.. She brought along a student of hers to watch it with her as well. So afterwards I was talking to them and this teacher preceeded to tell me how poorly trained certain dancers were (mostly the soloists). I was like...shattered. I'll bet they both sat there and critiqued the whole performance, just like with your experience (vegansmom). I still don't think she realized how offensive she was to me and everyone I know who worked so hard.
  6. I think people are just getting more and more inconsiderate They talk and get too rowdy during performances, especially amateur types (like recitals and comps). People don't remove their loud children either, and that really bugs me. If a baby is crying, they need to leave (too bad if they paid $$ for the show). A really annoying thing about recitals is when people get up and leave after their own kid has finished performing, how rude is that? Anyway, I'm sure I'm repeating lots of what has already been said but I think sometimes adults are more annoying than the kids . During my last recital I was totally disgusted with the talking and people moving around, especially when the little kids performed-like they weren't worthy of the same consideration the older performers get. How bout this? If the rule is no flash photos or use of video cams during the performance and the announcement is made right before the performance and it's noted on the program, is it okay to still do it? Ummm nooo..... but they still do, you can bet on it and I've almost fallen off a stage from being disoriented from flashes. Don't even let me get going on sporting events and how the parents swear and scream at everyone, grrrrr. Oh wait, let me throw in how people get up and talk and stuff during the National Anthem...flag, what flag? Aakkkkkkkkkkkk!!! Sigh...

  8. Cool question. I'm a righty but I turn better in the right direction which I think is a left handed thing. I don't know. My jumps are much better to the right as well. What are people's thoughts on dominant sides? I thought right handed people do better going left, am I wrong? Sorry to side track this question..
  9. I've never had this happen at dance that I recall, but at home the thing I use to get rid of them INSTANTLY is a teaspon of peanut butter. Try it, maybe will work for you (although carrying a jar along in your dancebag might be a bit much, lol).
  10. Thanks to everyone for the info!!! Didn't expect so many replies to this. Appreciate it!
  11. Do you know of any ballets that depict the Nazi Holocaust or other human tragedies (modern day)? Any info would be great, thanks.
