  1. Oh, for sure, and I suspect that was the explanation. But why are the Met Opera ushers so fussy? Nothing is visible on the stage in the way of copyrighted designs until the curtain calls, which they do nothing to stop people from photographing and videotaping. I've noticed several episodes when visitors just wanted a photograph of themselves standing in the theater before the performance and ushers rushed to stop them. I had the same experience at the Kennedy Center at an intermission when I was wanting to take a picture of my group with a dancer from Washington Ballet who had joined us. The usher rushed up and upbraided me quite harshly to stop taking pictures, and hadn't I heard the announcement? I tried to explain I assumed the announcement meant that I wasn't to take pictures during the performance, I didn't think it applied to taking a picture of my friends in row Y at the intermission, and she kept saying quite rudely "Didn't you hear the announcement?" as if I were some kind of idiot. This kind of treatment can also spoil one's evening at the ballet. Maybe we should start a thread on "usher behaviour". I had a run-in with a very rude one at the Met this May too.
  2. As of the current posting on the ROH website, Alexandrova and Skvortsov still have 3 Swan Lakes (out of 8),. Alexandrova has one Gamzatti and one Flames of Paris. That's not exactly being "dropped", is it?
  3. I have also had very good success with returning tickets to the ROH, even when doing it at the last minute, or almost (about 330 pm for a recent evening performance of Mayerling). The refund appeared on my credit card account very promptly. Be aware though, that when you buy something with your credit card, the credit card company adds a 2.5% commission to the purchase, and you don't get that back when you get your refund, so you will be a little out of pocket.
  4. Other places you can see Manon if you feel like travelling: Vienna October, November, and December 13 Denmark Feb March 14

  8. The Australian Ballet has an interesting article on the original designs for "4 T's" and how they led to the "typical" Balanchine black-and-white practice clothes costumes. http://www.behindbal...-used-to-dress/
  9. a "Cojocaru and Kobborg and Friends" gala is part of Sarasota Ballet's Ashton festival next April (details yet to be revealed).
  10. seats in row H for $29? Every time I look they are $135. Row J and K right on the wall are $57 (if there are any left) but anything closer in is, again, $135. Plus $9 per ticket service charges.
  11. Rear orchestra is pretty good in that theatre, actually, especially if you can get a seat in the middle of the row. They're not dramatic ballets so seeing the expression on their faces is not as important as for, say, R&J (which I still think you should go and see!)
  12. I am not sure if you can access these from outside Canada, but British Columbia's Knowledge Network is offering several dance productions free online, including Graeme Murphy's Romeo and Juliet (Australian Ballet, Madeleine Eastoe and Kevin Jackson), David Bintley's Cinderella (Birmingham Royal Ballet, Iain MacKay and Elisha Willis), James Kudelka's The Four Seasons (National Ballet of Canada, Rex Harrington, Chan Hon Goh, Greta Hodgkinson, Martine Lamy) - if anyone is thinking of going to see this at Saratoga in July you might want to have a look and the Royal Ballet's Sleeping Beauty (Alina Cojocaru and Federico Bonelli) and Nutcracker (Alina Cojocaru as Clara, Stephen McRae as the Prince, and Miyako Yoshida as the Sugar Plum Fairy.). Follow this link: http://knowledge.ca/programs/dance
  13. I'd go for Romeo and Juliet. Wait till you see the dancing while you're listening to the music to judge the music. You will soon think that R&J music is the most fabulous thing ever.
  14. You can see it in Toronto Feb. 26- March 2 2014.
  15. Just out ofcuriosity and wandering even further off topic, what about pled/pleaded bothers you? Using both forms in the same article? Using one form instead of the other? (In which case, which form don't you like?) Unless I need to adhere to a style guide that says otherwise, I'm a "pled" girl myself. interesting. it's one of those US (pled) vs Brit (pleaded) differences
  16. "Peek" and "see" both have a double "e" -- maybe that will help. and if that doesn't help, so does "leer"
  17. to add to the list of unintentionally comic misspellings, the National Ballet of Canada posted a photo to their facebook page of a ballerina sowing [sic] her pointe shoes...

  19. I haven't seen Bojesen's Marguerite but I've loved her in everything I've seen her do.
  20. Their facebook page still seems to be alive, and they've posted a spring intensive schedule: https://www.facebook.com/barcelona.ballet Also from March 31 on their facebook page: Barcelona Ballet March 31 OPEN AUDITION FOR PROFESSIONAL FEMALE DANCERS NEXT TUESDAY 9th OF APRIL AT 11:00am IN THE STUDIOS OF BARCELONA BALLET, SITUATED AT C/CONSELL DE CENT 467-469, FOR TOUR TO ARGENTINA. DANCERS MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM THE 27TH OF MARCH TO THE 10TH OF JUNE. PLACES ARE LIMITED, SO IT IS NECESSARY TO CONFIRM YOUR ATTENDANCE VIA MAIL AT produccion@angelcorella.org Here's an article from the beginning of April, translate from Catalan in Google's inimitable style http://www.lavanguardia.com/participacion/cartas/20130408/54372123025/el-liceu-sense-corella.html Once again the news of the departure of Ballet Corella and his Barcelona. We again allowed? Since we escaped five years ago and now is when we need it, we will fall into the same error? How can we be both donkeys? We have a golden opportunity to level cultural and economic value and we do not know. The Liceu seeking funding in the U.S. and do not know how to get help if you associate the name of Corella Ballet Barcelona at the Gran Teatre. Besides giving it an identity that has not, make sure the claim is Corella to get sponsorship. I do not understand this lack of vision, probably why we were such bad things. We are managed by incompetent, especially in the cultural field, I feel I have to say.
  21. I saw Ashton's The Dream on TV at the age of 5 (I was living in England at the time) then London Festival Ballet's (now ENB) Nutcracker live, then I moved to Winnipeg and went to every Royal Winnipeg Ballet performance from the age of 9 on.
  22. When the title of the ballet is "Cinderella", it doesn't matter to the general public who the choreographer is.
  23. That's what they said about the almost identical opera house Jack Diamond designed in Toronto, and I assure you, for ballet it is NOT TRUE. In fact, very few seats have a good view. Maybe I've been lucky, but this hasn't been true in my limited experience. You must have been lucky (or perhaps tall). I spend a lot of time at the Four Seasons in many different seats.

  25. The choreographer's name is Preljocaj.
