Expect the eclectic. As "the most forward-looking American ballet company on the continent" (Contra Costa Times), SF Ballet is delighted to present a world premiere by Liam Scarlett, who, at only 26, was recently appointed artist-in-residence at The Royal Ballet. Scarlett's highly inventive works, which have stunned audiences and critics, are currently in the repertories of The Royal Ballet and Miami City Ballet. The program also includes the return of Helgi Tomasson's masterful The Fifth Season and Serge Lifar's elegant Suite en Blanc, a brilliant showcase of French neoclassicism featuring "a parade of stunning individual and Hollywood-big corps performances" (San Jose Mercury News).

SF Ballet is pleased to present a world premiere work by Helgi Tomasson. Since assuming leadership of the Company in 1985, Tomasson has choreographed over 40 ballets, ranging from lavish full-length story ballets to intimate neoclassical works that showcase the unique qualities of his individual dancers. The program continues with the 20th anniversary presentation of Maelstrom, the first work created for SF Ballet by Mark Morris. Upon its premiere, the San Francisco Bay Guardian called Maelstrom “a jewel that goes right to the core of classical European dance.” The program concludes with Yuri Possokhov’s The Rite of Spring, a gripping interpretation of Stravinsky’s masterwork, which made its premiere during the 2013 season.
